Anime film director Makoto Shinkai (your name.) teased on his Twitter account on Thursday that he is working on a new feature film for next year.
Previously, during a talk event at the “Huawei Presents Starry Sky Illuminations” display in Roppongi, Tokyo in January 2017, Shinkai had said that at that time he had not written a single word for his next planned film, even though the deadline for the proposal was approaching. He added that he was reading novels, manga, and books on folklore, as well as watching movies to look for something that would link to his emotions.
Shinkai previously said at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2016 that he would like to make his next work at TOHO within three years. He commented that his next work will probably be about young boys and girls in adolescence.
Shinkai’s your name. the film opened in Japan in August 2016 and has become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, the second highest-grossing Japanese film, and the second highest-grossing anime film, with earnings of more than 25 billion yen (about US$225 million). Worldwide, it is the highest-grossing anime film, having earned more than an estimated US$355 million.
